Your Partner in Preventing Osteoporosis and Fractures

The Fracture Liaison Clinic is a program dedicated to evaluating bone health to prevent secondary fractures. It identifies patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia and those at risk for future fractures, ensuring appropriate referral for further evaluation and treatment to improve bone strength and reduce fracture risk. A fragility fracture is defined as a fracture resulting from a ground-level fall or occurring without significant trauma.

Who Can Benefit from the Fracture Liaison Clinic?

  • Post-menopausal women with a history of fragility fracture
  • A traumatic onset fracture
  • Men with a history of fragility fracture, especially 70 years or older
  • Patients on chronic steroids
  • Intraoperative findings of poor bone quality, specifically if they have not fractured. This can prevent fractures which can alter/impact patient quality of life and decrease healthcare costs
  • Anyone that a healthcare provider feels that the patient may be at risk

Once referred, a comprehensive and thorough assessment of your medical and surgical history is taken. This assessment includes a questionnaire, lab testing specific to bone health, and a bone density scan which later will be evaluated. Medications that affect bone health are reviewed, as well as lifestyle and level of physical activity.
